The Private Personal Journal of Kelsey Alyssa
(above left to right Dylan, Marnie, and Ethan)
Meeting Some One New
October 2nd
This is my first day keeping a written journal of what happened to me, so I should tell you about myself. My name is Kelsey Alyssa, I’m a senior in high school, and most importantly I am a witch. (No I am not crazy!)
Today I was leaving and as usual ta from the football team rammed into my shoulder causing me to drop all my books. I knelt down to pick them up and when I looked for my notebook (this one!) someone said, “Are you okay?”
I looked up and saw the nicest boy ever. He had my notebook in one hand and was offering me the other. “Yeah, I’m fine.” I said taking his hand.
He pulled me to my feet and handed me my notebook. “I’m Ethan.” he said.
“I’m Kelsey Alyssa. Well that’s what most people call me,” I said, “except for my best friend Trent.”
“Really? Are you a writer?” he asked glancing at all my notebooks.
I looked around and whispered, “I know where you really came from. Who you really are, Ethan.”
“What? I’m from Canada.” he said.
“You mean Halloweentown, Mr. Warlock?”
“How did you know that?”
“I’m a witch.”
“That’s amazing! So does this Trent kid know about our world?”
“Yeah, I told him. He’s kind of changed since then, grown to dislike Halloween. Trent understands the prejudice people like us go through.”
I had only just realized we had walked to my next class. “Do you want to hang out at lunch?” Ethan said.
“Yeah, I’d like that. Oh and watch who you do... that around.”
He took a small step around forward and snapped his fingers. A rose appeared in his hand and he gently slide the steam behind my left ear. “How’s that for magic?” he whispered.
“Pretty charming. I’ll see you later, Ethan.” I said.
I watched him leave and half way down the hall he turned and waved. Blushing slightly I waved back. “Kelsey Alyssa, do you know him?” Marnie Piper asked.
“We just met. Why?” I said.
“How much do you know about him?” she asked.
“Where he came from and… who he is.” I told her.
We entered the class room and sat down. The time passed quickly and when I left Ethan was outside the door. I saw the usual football guy coming toward me, but then Ethan pulled me out of the way.
I stumbled backwards and as I began to fall, Ethan caught me. “Does someone always try knock your books out of your hands?” he asked.
“They don’t try, Ethan. I’m invisible to most people here. No one really notices that I exist,” I said, “and thanks for that.”
“No problem.” he said.
We started to walk to the cafeteria when someone called, “Hey, Kelsey!”
I turned and saw Trent walking down the hall towards us. “Hey, Trent.” I said.
“Have you seen those Canadian kids? They’re kind of a weird group of kids.” he said.
“Um… Ethan this is Trent. Trent this is Ethan, he’s from Canada.” I said.
“This is awkward… don’t take that offensively. I say everyone is weird. Are you joining us for lunch?” Trent said.
“No, I’m going to hang with the others. Nice meeting you, Trent.” Ethan said.
He slipped me a piece of paper and left. “Is he a… a person like you?” Trent asked.
“No, now if you’ll excuse me I need to go get something from my locker. Tell Tiffany I said hey.”
“Right.”
I turned on my heel and ran to my locker. After I opened my locker, I looked at the paper Ethan had slipped me. It was a locker number and combination.
Was that Ethan’s locker? Quietly I closed my locker and went to find the other. When I found it I put in the combination and opened the locker. Suddenly I was in a room with Ethan in front of me, holding onto my shirt.
“Magic, you should have known, Kelsey Alyssa.” he said.
“Why did you bring a mortal to our hideout?” a girl with a pink scarf said.
“I’m not a mortal, you troll.” I said.
It wasn’t an attack against her, simply acknowledging that she was a troll. “Prove it.” the girl said.
After thinking for a second, I decided to go with the same thing Ethan had. I snapped my fingers and a rose appeared in my hand. “Even mortals can do that.” a tall boy said.
“True, but can they do this?” I asked snapping my fingers again.
Ethan and I began to float. He started laughing at the others. “Do you believe her now?” he asked.
Everyone nodded as I snapped one more time. Our feet touched the ground and I handed the rose to Ethan. The girl stepped forward and said, “I’m Natalie.”
“I’m Kelsey Alyssa.” I said.
Natalie ushered me over to a seat away from everyone else. “There is something between you and Ethan isn’t there?” she said.
“I hope.” I said looking at Ethan.
He was looking at the rose I had given him, deep in thought. I looked back to Natalie when Ethan looked back up. It seemed like he had been thinking about leaving but he caught a glimpse of the rose that was still in my hair and decided otherwise.
“Hey, Natalie, I think Marnie wanted to talk to you. Why don’t you go find her while I keep Kelsey Alyssa company?” Ethan said.
“Alright. See you Kelsey Alyssa.” she said leaving us alone.
“Hey, Ethan.” I said.
“Do you want to go get a burger with me on Sunday?” he asked.
“Sure, I’d really like that.” I said.
“I’ll pick you up at five. Literally.” he said winking.
I looked at my watch and said, “We need to head to class or we will be seen climbing out of a locker.”
“Do you know how to get to Science 101?” he asked as we popped through the locker.
“I’m heading there now. Come on!” I said taking his hand.
We started to run to class. It almost seemed like we were flying through the halls. “Um… Kelsey Alyssa can I ask you something?” someone behind us asked.
Ethan and I stopped running and turned back to see who had spoken. It was Trent’s girlfriend Tiffany. “Sure.” I said.
“What did you tell Trent to make him dislike Halloween so much?” Tiffany asked.
“I can’t tell you. Nobody was supposed to find out in the first place. Besides you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” I said.
“Then why’d you tell Trent?” she asked.
“I trust him more than anybody else.” I told her.
“Whatever. Stay away from my boyfriend.” she said.
“Tiffany, I will talk to whomever I want, whenever I want whether you want me to or not. He was my best friend long before he was your boyfriend.”
I turned on my heel and went into the classroom. Ethan gestured for me to sit next to him. Lucky for me that was also next to Trent. Knowing Tiffany would think I was waving to Trent, I waved.
Trent saw Tiffany stomp her foot and flounce away. I slid into the seat between Trent and Ethan. “What was that about, Kelsey?” Trent asked.
“Nothing for you to worry about.” I said.
Ethan hadn’t brought his book so we shared mine. After school we walked to my house and did our homework. “See you tomorrow.” I said.
“Bye, Kelsey Alyssa.” Ethan said.
He was half way down the block when I broke into a run. “Ethan, I just wanted to tell you, you can call me Kelsey.” I said.
“Okay, Kelsey, I’ll see you tomorrow.” he said.
Before I returned home I kissed his cheek. He smiled and popped home. I walked back to my house and walked in the front door. Slowly I made my way to my room and closed the door.
The Fight and the Flirt
October 5th
I so hope he forgives me! Perhaps I was a little to mean to him. Who am I kidding? He’ll never forgive me!
I was walking to lunch with Ethan like I have been since Tuesday, when Trent pulled me aside. “We need to talk,” he said looking at Ethan, “alone.”
“I’ll meet you at the table, Ethan.” I said.
He nodded and left us alone. “Why haven’t you spoken to me the last three days? Is Ethan controlling you?” Trent asked.
“How dare you!? Ethan has nothing to do with this! Maybe you should ask Tiffany! ‘Stay away from my boyfriend,’ my broomstick.” I scowled.
“Tiffany said that?” he asked.
“Of course she did! I wouldn’t make up something like that just to get a laugh out of it later!” I said and left Trent alone.
“Kelsey, please, come here!” he called.
I continued to the table where Ethan was sitting. “Come here.” he said as I slid into the seat next him.
He put his arm around me and pulled me into a hug. “…how dare… best friend… won’t even speak… don’t care… over!” I heard Trent saying from three tables away.
“We should go.” I said.
Ethan stood just after me and took my hand. We walked to Science 101. Class wouldn’t start for another five minutes so I leaned against the locker just outside the classroom. He put his hand on the locker next to me.
“I’m sorry.” he said.
“For what? You aren’t leaving are you?” I asked putting my hands around his neck.
“No, Kels, I’m not leaving. This fight is all my fault. If I hadn’t met you then this wouldn’t whole fight…” he began.
“It’s not your fault, baby. It’s Tiffany’s, and I knew it would happen sooner or later. Why would you blame yourself anyway?” I said.
“I don’t know… It just seemed like this all started on Tuesday when we met. Just after that actually.” he said.
“Do me a favor, will you, Ethan?”
“Anything.”
“Do NOT ever blame yourself for my issues with my other friends. I’ve always had problems and now they are being resolved.” I said.
“I promise, sweetie.” he said. “You know I’ve always had a thing witches.”
He snapped and a large bouquet of roses appeared in his hand. He handed them to me with the sweetest smile I had ever seen. “I’ve always found warlocks strangely… charming.” I whispered.
Ethan leaned in a little to kiss me but Taylor ran up next to me and said, “Kelsey Alyssa, is this that boy you told me about?”
“Hang on, Tay.” I said.
Ethan put his hand on my cheek and whispered, “Meet me at the hideout right after school.”
“Okay.” I said taking his hand. I looked at Taylor. “Yes, Tay, he is.”
“Oh, splendid! Trent told me to tell him that if he goes out with you on Sunday then he will reveal your secret. What secret?” Taylor said.
“I thought I could trust him! ‘Don’t worry, Kelsey. You know you can trust me’ my broomstick.” I muttered.
Ethan gave a snort and said, “I’ll explain later. Don’t forget auditions on Monday. See you later, Kels. Nice meeting you Taylor.”
“Ethan, we have this class together.” I said.
“Yeah, with Trent.” he pointed out.
“Right, I’m coming with you.” I said.
“He’ll know something’s up and reveal you secret. We’ll have to cut Monday for auditions anyway.”
“Fine, I’ll see you after school.”
“Bye, sweetie.” he said kissing my forehead.
Taylor and I sat in the front row with Julia. “Are you and Trent fighting?” Julia asked.
“No, why would you ask such a thing?” I said. Technically it was true, I was fighting with Tiffany.
“I heard him yelling at him earlier. ‘How dare you!? Ethan has nothing to do with this!’ seems like you were arguing with Trent about your new friend.” she said.
“Tiffany more than Trent but yes I am fighting with Trent.”
“About Ethan?” Taylor asked.
“He thought that I haven’t spoken to him to him in three days because Ethan won’t let me. In truth I won’t let myself.”
The next few hours passed by slowly. I was excused from class early due to a dire emergency. Apparently my ‘cousin E.D.’ tripped and fell down the stairs at my house. So basically Ethan made a fake phone call to the school to get me out of class early.
When I entered the hideout Ethan was on the couch waiting. “You got my message then?” he said.
“Yep, they always deliver messages, E.D.” I said leaning against the wall.
Ethan stood and walked over to where I was standing. He placed his hand next to my head and said, “Now, where were we?”
“I think you were about to kiss me.” I whispered putting my hands around his neck.
“That sounds about right.” he said putting his hands on my waist.
I took a step forward and we kissed. Our lips met and sparks flew. It was the oldest kind of magic Angie Cromwell had ever told me about. Ethan stepped back as Marnie came in.
“So why are you two in here?” she asked.
“My cousin… oh, forget it. We were in the middle of rehearsing our lines for the auditions on Monday.” I said.
“Really?” Where in the script does it say you kiss?” Marine asked.
“Page twenty three, line seven.” Ethan said handing her the script.
“Carry on.” Marnie said.
“Actually we were just leaving.” I said.
Ethan and I left Marine alone in the hideout. We walked out the front doors and walked to my house. “So what did you laugh about earlier?” I asked.
“That just means that Sunday is a no go. How about tonight instead?” Ethan said.
“Brilliant! You are brilliant, Ethan! I’d love to.” I said.
“So where to?” he asked.
“Let’s do this the mortal way. How about we watch a movie?” I said.
“Fine, mortal movie it is, love.” Ethan said.
Over the next few hours we watched a couple different movies. Most of them were comedies but one was a romantic comedy. After that my parents told me to say goodnight to Ethan.
The two of us walked outside. “Goodnight, Ethan.” I said.
“Goodnight, Kels. I’ll see you soon… and if you ever want to talk just use this.” he said putting a necklace around my neck.
“A personal witch’s glass,” I said surprised, “and you have one to?”
“Yeah.” he said moving his shirt collar to where a golden chain was just visible.
I gave Ethan a quick hug before left. When he got to the corner he looked around before he pulled out his broomstick. As Ethan raised into the air a couple of roses appeared in my hands.
He is the most charming warlock I have ever met. (Such irony.)
Silver Dagger in the Back and the Pumpkin
October 6th
Today I went to the mall. Ethan told me that Marnie was taking everyone and since we weren’t going out Sunday, I should come. They picked me up early and we set out for the mall.
“Morning, Ethan.” I said.
“Morning, Kels.” he said.
“How is it going?” I asked. Little did he know that I knew he had a plan in mind.
“Fine.” he said. It was unlike him to only say a few words to me.
“What’s wrong, Ethan?” I asked.
“Noth… my dad wants me to do something that I don’t want to do.” he said.
“Silver dagger?” I whispered.
His eyes got wide and filled with sorrow. “How’d you know?”
“The Demonion is written in your eye because of your father.”
“That still doesn’t explain how you know about the dagger.”
I lifted my sleeve to show him the witch’s glass my parents had given me. “My mother is also in that… club. Your father told her and she told me.”
“Please forgive me,” he said, “my father is making me.”
“I’ll forgive you if you make the right choice.” I said.
He looked at me in wonder. “What do you mean?”
“You’ll find out later.”
When the car was parked we all got out and went into the mall. Ethan took my hand and pulled me away from the group. “Kelsey, I never wanted you to get involved in this. If they suspect you, I’ll never forgive myself.” he said.
“Ethan, don’t do this, please.” I said.
“I’m sorry,” he said, “but this ends here.”
“I don’t care if they think it’s me! You can’t do this, Ethan!”
“Goodbye, Kelsey Alyssa.”
I watched, tears flooding my eyes, as Ethan turned and left. My tears fell and the splash of them hitting the ground echoed in my ears. Slowly I sank to the floor.
“Kelsey Alyssa, are… are you okay?” a familiar voice asked.
“Yeah, Dylan, I’m fine.” I said looking up at him.
He reached out and wiped the tears from my eyes as Natalie said, “I’ll talk to her Dylan.”
Dylan stood up and left us alone. “Kelsey Alyssa, what happened?” she asked.
“Ethan! Where is he?” I realized suddenly.
“Over there.” she said pointing.
I ran up the stairs and rounded the corner. Ethan and some others were at a pizza place. As soon as Ethan saw me he looked for the closest escape but before he could move I had my arms around his neck.
“Please, Ethan, I love you. Don’t leave me.” I whispered.
“Go away.” he said.
“Don’t you love me?” I asked.
He took a deep breath and said, “No.”
“That is all you had to say.” I said turning to leave.
I thought I heard him mutter, “Forgive me,” but I found it highly unlikely.
When I left the pizza place I decided to go to a Halloween store. A few minutes after I got there I heard Ethan and a few others come by and talk about the display. Soon I heard a football player make a remark about it. Ethan became offended by it.
“Please don’t, Ethan.” I mutter so quietly only I could hear.
An explosion of purple smoke got my attention before the scream did. Only Ethan was able to produce the smoke. The others would think it was for their cover, but I knew it was so he could plant the silver dagger. His second one today.
One for the pumpkin
and
One for my back.
Halloween Betrayal
October 31st
I haven’t spoken to anyone since the 6th of this month. People hadn’t worried but I never answer question, never make eye contact, or do homework… like I should. I’ve been spending my time speed reading, charming pens, and not speaking. Fun times.
Whether HE knows or not, I’m not sure I really care. It is HIS fault for current state of being. “Kelsey, please,” Trent said, “speak or at least smile.”
I didn’t say anything, but I shook my head. “Why?” Brooke asked.
I looked up as HE passed by. “Eth… HIM still? It’s been three weeks, please at least say one word.” Taylor said.
Things had gone back to normal, except no one had heard my voice in three weeks and Tiffany wasn’t with us. Again I shook my head. “Hit someone or better yet hit HIM.” Julia said.
I looked up through the curtain of now, black and red, hair. The day after HE broke up with me I had died it. They knew the conversation was coming to a close. Suddenly a hand was on my shoulder. It wasn’t Trent, Meghan, Brooke, Taylor, or Julia.
“Kelsey… Alyssa, can I talk to you?” the person asked. It was a boy and the voice was way too familiar for my liking. It was the voice I hadn’t heard since the auditions from the 8th of this month.
I stood, still looking at the floor. The boy who had suddenly decided to talk to me, must have known that I wasn’t speaking to anyone. He led my down the hall and then he stopped by my next class.
“Look at me.” he said.
I shook my head. He put two fingers under my chin and lifted my head until we made eye contact. “Can you speak?” HE asked.
I nodded and then he said, “Will you speak if you have to?”
I gave him a ‘depends’ kind of look. “You need to understand why I lied to you.” Ethan said.
I raised an eyebrow. He glanced at the rose tucked behind my ear. I saw faint smile raise to the surface. “Kelsey Alyssa, I lied when I told you…” then the bell rang.
He closed his eyes and thought. When he opened his eyes I was gone. I sat down next to Trent and gave him a faint smile. That got him to smile, “Feel better?” he asked.
I held up my fingers and gave him a sign that meant ‘a little.’ He nodded and said, “Not enough to speak?”
I shook my head. “Um… Kelsey Alyssa, right?” a girl asked.
I nodded and she said, “Ethan Dalloway asked me to give this to you.”
The girl handed me a rose with a paper wrapped around the steam. I unrolled the paper and read it. If I was speaking I would have laughed at it before I got up and threw away the rose and paper.
Trent watched as I did so, “Are you sure he’s not a warlock?” he asked.
I nodded. “He isn’t?” he asked.
I shook my head and thought to myself, “Why am I even keeping his secret?”
“Because he is still keeping mine.” a small voice inside me said.
“Kelsey Alyssa, do you know the answer?” the teacher asked.
I opened my book and pointed to a family on the Periodic Table of Elements. “Family one is her final answer.” HE said.
“Correct. Family one is the most active family on the table. Why is that Kelsey Alyssa?” the teacher asked.
I looked up at her and said, “Family one has an odd amount of electrons in the outer most ring of energy, therefore making it very unstable. Interaction with another element will cause the particles to react quickly and easily, or to dumb it down for some people… Making it a very unstable family on the Periodic Table.”
“Nicely worded, Kelsey Alyssa. It’s nice to hear you voice again.” the teacher added.
Slowly I looked to my left to see Trent smiling at me. He must have agreed. A pair of arms flew around my neck in a hug. “Get off of me, Taylor.” I said.
The bell rang and I stood to leave. “Kelsey Alyssa and Ethan please stay after class.” the teacher said.
“I’ll be right outside the door.” Trent said.
“Alright.” I said.
“Please, forgive me.” Ethan said as the classroom door closed.
“I’m not here to talk to you, Dalloway.” I said.
“She’s not coming. I asked her to hold us back after class so we could work this out… Dalloway?” he said.
“Then I’m leaving.” I told him.
Before he could stop me, I snapped and then I was outside the door. “Come on.” I said to Trent.
“I can’t believe I finally get to hear your voice again after so long. I thought you had gone mute and wouldn’t tell us.” he joked.
We walked to our next class together. He didn’t pressure me to speak by avoiding questions. “He wanted me to forgive him.” I said suddenly.
“It does sound like it is time to forgive and forget.” he said.
“I’m not so sure.” I said.
“Are you coming tonight?” he asked.
“No, it’s a bad idea and if you were smart you would follow my lead to stay home and do nothing.” I said.
“Okay… or I could talk my parents into letting you come down and study for the Chemistry test tomorrow.”
“Study? Sounds harder than speed reading, but sure.”
“So I’ll see you after school.”
After school I shoved my Chemistry book into my shoulder bag and met Trent outside. “Can we do this my way or are we going to take the bus?” I said.
“Whichever is faster.” he said.
“Follow me.” I said.
We walked across the road and walked into a dark alley. I pulled a small broomstick out of my shoulder bag. Looking around, I waved my hand over it. It became larger and hovered in place.
I swung my leg over the broom and Trent followed my example. We slowly began to rise and then we flew to his block, high in the clouds where no one would see us. I looked around to make sure no one would see us then landed the broom slowly so our feet touched the ground.
“That was so fun.” Trent said.
“Oh, goddess.” I said suddenly.
The locket I had wrapped around my wrist suddenly began to vibrate. Carefully I opened the locket. “Kelsey Alyssa, please, let me explain.” Ethan said.
“Excuse,” I looked at the locket then Trent, “…us.”
“Go on up the stairs and go into the second room on your right.” he said.
I went into the designated room and said, “Go on, explain. But don’t expect me to believe you, though.”
“I lied to you when you I asked if I love you. It was to protect you from harm. If my dad found out why I’m going to…” he began.
“Shouldn’t you be somewhere?” I said.
“Yes, but please, come tonight. Come to the haunted house.” he said.
“I’ll think about it…. Thought about it, fine. I’ll come.” I said.
“Thank you.” he said.
I closed the locket and popped out of the room. When I looked around saw Dylan and Ethan looking at where I appeared. “Hi, Dylan!” I exclaimed throwing my arms around his neck and hugged him.
“Hey, Kelsey Alyssa.” Dylan said.
“This isn’t scary at all.” I told him.
“The point isn’t to scare people. It’s to make them NOT fear witches, warlocks, trolls, fairies, and other creatures from Halloweentown.” Ethan said.
“I’m going to go see if Natalie needs any help.” Dylan said taking his leave.
“Stick with me along as possible, until I say to leave my side.” he said.
“Fine, but at the first sign of trouble I’m leaving and not coming back until I see fit.” I told him.
“That’s more than I could ever ask.” he said slipping an arm around my shoulders.
“Stop right there!” I said stepping away. “Just because I came doesn’t mean I forgive you, because I haven’t even come close to forgiveness.”
“I understand that, Kelsey Alyssa, but it doesn’t mean that you don’t love me anymore.” he said.
“Love you, my broomstick.” I scowled.
“Okay… maybe not.” he said.
We walked around until I heard a bunch of screaming and saw people running for the exit. “Ethan, you didn’t!” I said.
“I’ve been with you the whole time.” he said.
Ethan looked around the corner and I said, ‘What are you looking at?”
“He’s here, and you have to leave now, before he sees you.” he said. He looked at me one last time, it looked like he had something else he wanted to say but instead walked around the corner saying, “Dad stop it!”
“Just In time!” Ethan’s father said.
I ran with the crowd. Three feet away from the entrance I turned and looked at the damage. Real monsters were coming out of the haunted house. After looking around I cast a spell to destroy the monsters. It did exactly the opposite, by doubling the amount. I looked around again and saw Ethan’s father.
“Agie, look there!” I called, pointing to Ethan’s father.
Agie cast a spell and the next thing I knew I was running with an angry mob, chasing Marnie and Agie. Ethan’s father made a little speech and introduced Ethan as his little helper.
I was actually a little surprised when Ethan didn’t say anything against it. It wasn’t very hard to turn around and leave. When I was outside the haunted house, I popped back to the room in Trent’s house.
I looked out the window and from behind me Trent said, “So you did decided to come back.”
“Sorry, I had to check on something.” I said.
“It’s fine. Just next time tell me you are going to pop out of my house. I had a little explaining to do to my mother as to why you had been up here so long without me coming in to study.” he said.
“Right.” I said.
“So how’d it go?” he asked.
“It was a…” I began.
I opened my locket knowing Ethan always left his open. The scene I saw was Ethan turning his back to his father to help Marnie and Agie. His father disappeared into an arch, the door back to Halloweentown.
“Halloween betrayal.” I said closing the locket.
Sorry for What?
November 7th
It’s my birthday and I wanted to give and not get. “Give what?” you may ask. It’s quiet a story to tell the truth. But today is different, as I am writing about my day as it happens.
On the way to school I opened the locket Ethan had given me. “Look outside!” I told him.
I saw a head appear in a window. “What are you doing you?” he asked when he came outside.
“I wanted to talk.” I said.
“About what?”
“Halloween night and what happened.”
“I’m listening.”
“I’m sorry.” I said.
“Sorry for what?” he asked.
“Not believing you, leaving before you made your choice, and above all ever doubting that you do love me.” I said taking his hand.
“I understand, Kelsey Alyssa, because I would have done the same thing if I were in your shoes.” he said.
“Like Trent said ‘it’s time to forgive and forget’ and that is exactly what I plan to do. I take that back… exactly what I have already done.”
“Kelsey!” Trent called from behind us.
“Hey, Trent.” I said.
“Happy birthday.” he said.
“It is.” I told him.
“Happy birthday, Kelsey Alyssa!” Julia, Brooke, Taylor, and Meghan said together as stopped outside the building with Trent and Ethan.
“Happy birthday.” Ethan said.
“So is he a warlock?” Trent asked.
“Not anymore.” Ethan said.
“Anymore?” Trent asked.
“He renounced his powers. Ethan’s mortal now.” I said.
Ethan looked and me and said, “How’d you know that?”
I glanced at the golden chain around his neck, barely visible under the collar of his shirt. Without thinking I pulled it out and closed the locket. “The same way I knew your what your choice was even though I had already left.” I said.
“I’m so sorry, Kels.” he said.
“Sorry for what, Ethan?” I asked.
“I’m sorry I hurt you in trying to keep you from getting hurt.”
“I understand, I would have done the same if I was in your shoes.”
Suddenly Ethan pulled his arm from behind his back and handed me a bouquet of roses. I raised an eyebrow and he said, “I learned it from some book.”
“I figure, ‘Even a mortal can do that.’ Remember?” I said.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw a warlock get ready to cast a memory spell. “Move!” I yelled as I tackled Ethan.
All my memories flashed before my eyes and disappeared. What I wrote here is all that I have left now. Is Ethan my friend or enemy? It is all mixed signals. Is Trent my best friend or is Taylor?
Awake at Last
November 8th
From what people have said my name is Kelsey Alyssa, I’m eighteen, my best friend is Trent, and I’m from a place called Halloweentown.
Two blonde boys came to see me today. One was named Trent and the other was Ethan. I had a feeling I knew them both very well. An hour later a few girls came in.
The one with curly red hair was Meghan, the one with straight red hair was Taylor, the one with short blonde hair was Brooke, and the one with long red hair was Julia.
“Hey, Kelsey Alyssa.” Brooke said.
“Hello, how are you all doing?” I said.
“Don’t you usually say yawl?” Taylor asked.
“I don’t know. Have I always had this memory problem?” I said.
“No, not this bad.” Meghan said.
“Excuse me, I need to take Kelsey Alyssa to Halloween-town.” a new girl said.
“Marnie, will you let me come to?” Ethan said.
“Sorry? You are a warlock, so of course you can.” she said.
“I meant wherever you are taking her in Halloweentown.” he said.
“Right, of course” she said.
Marine and I opened the portal and we went through it closely followed by Ethan. “Why does he follow me everywhere?” I asked.
“Ethan Dalloway…” she began.
“Dalloway!” I exclaimed. “Get him away from me!”
“Wow, um… Kels, love, I’m on your side.” he said.
“My side, my broomstick! Send him back!” I pleaded.
“Ethan, I think it’s best if you leave without a fight.” Marnie said.
“Fine, but I won’t give up on you, Kelsey.” he said walking back through the portal.
Why did I react like that? He seems like such a nice guy. I mean, “I won’t give up on you, Kelsey.” what kind of evil person says anything like that.
Everything came down to my sudden memory loss. All the answers were there, the good and the bad… or maybe just the good. I need my memories back, but how do I get them!?
Am I sorry for what I did to be in this current state and how DID I get to be in this current state? Does Ethan, Trent, Brooke, Julia, Taylor, or Meghan old the answers? Should I ask them?

I’ve talked to the others, well except for Ethan. Everything seems to point back to him. Marine just went to get him.
I haven’t gained back any of my memories. Agie Cromwell said that to be able to regain my memories we need to know who made it happen. A few things that people have told me I’ve done sound like things a completely different person would do.
“Kelsey Alyssa, are you ready to see Ethan?” Marnie asked.
“Yeah.” I said.
Ethan walked into my room. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing. I just wanted to talk to you… well ask you a few questions any way.” I said.
“Well, okay, but I’m not sure I have your answers.” he said.
Marnie left us alone and Ethan sat across from me on my bed. “The others said I was with you just before I lost my memories. Is that much true?” I asked.
“Yeah, we were right outside the school.” he said.
“Is there anything that may have triggered it? Did I fall or hit my head?”
“No, you didn’t fall or hit your head. I remember you yelling ‘move’ and then you tackled me.”
“Was there another person there who might have known I would protect you at all costs. A witch or a warlock?”
“There was a warlock there, but he wasn’t after you. I saw a flash of green light hit you and then you lost your memories.” he said. “I was so scared… so worried that something worse had happened because when I called out your name, you didn’t reply.”
“So you’re saying that I risked my life for yours? I’m sorry… I want to believe you but I just can’t bring myself to. Please forgive me.” I said.
“There is nothing to forgive.” he said. “I should go. People are starting to wonder if there is something going on in here.”
He stood up and kissed my cheek. “Get off!” I yelled. “Never come back!”
“Kelsey! What happened? Are you okay?” Taylor asked coming in.
Ethan stopped in the hall whispered something to Julia and then left. Julia came in as I said, “He kissed me! Never let him back in here!”
“Kelsey Alyssa, it’s okay. He didn’t mean to scare you. It skipped his mind; the situation. Ethan does love you and that’s why he did that. I know for a fact he is sorry he scared you and I think you should forgive him.” Julia said sitting next to me.
She put her arm around my shoulders and comforted the frightened me. “I know he didn’t mean to. It’s just like there something going on inside me. Like a chemical reaction, family one on the Periodic Table reacting to something in family six.” I stuttered.
“Even without any memories she is smart.” Dylan said from the door. “How is she?”
“Fine.” they said.
Dylan stayed with me all night and talked while the others went home to sleep. I’ve been thinking… the kiss was familiar. Have I ever kissed Ethan? Where we dating when I lost my memory? Did I ever tell him I love him?
Kind of Clear
June 26th
There are a few things that are kind of clear to me now, mostly jus the questions I have asked myself before. There answers are as follows.
Is Trent or Taylor my best friend? Trent.
Am I sorry for what I did to be in this current state? No, to tell the truth.
How did I get to be in this state? Memory loss spell cast by an unknown warlock.
Do any of my friends know how this happened? Only Ethan could come up with an answer.
Have I ever kissed Ethan? From what Marnie said, I had.
Was I dating Ethan when I lost my memory? No, but we had just made-up from a huge fight.
Had I ever told anybody I love them? Ethan said I told him once.
Trent came to see if I had any of my old memories back. “I remember hanging out with you in middle school, telling you I’m a witch, and then something about a silver dagger.” I said.
“Only three memories? Well I suppose that is good.” he said.
“Did you always tell me the truth?” I asked.
He took a deep breath and said, “No, and I should apologize for that. I see now how much can change in a few years.”
“Just promise me that you will tell me the truth from now on.” I said.
“I promise.” he said.
“Tell me if I ever kissed Ethan.”
“Yes, you have.”
“Have I ever told him I love him?”
“Yes, you did.”
“Do you know what he said back?”
He bite his lip and said, “Yes, but I can’t tell you. That’s something that you should hear from him not me.”
“Do you hate him?” I asked.
“No, we get along really well, now.”
“If I ask you to go get him so we can talk, would you stay with me while we talk?”
“Of course. If you want me to, that is.” he said.
“Will you please go get him?” I asked.
“Are you sure?” he said.
“I don’t know why, but every time I see him I remember something more of my past.”
Trent left and a few seconds later he followed Ethan into the room. The three of us talked for a few hours and they left.
Will I still have these memories when I regain the others?
Suddenly
March 3rd
After classes at Witch University I went back to my dorm room. Seconds later Dylan Piper came in. “Hey, Dylan.” I said.
I was on the bed, back against the wall, knees drawn up to my chest, and arms around them. “Still trying to remember your past?” he asked.
“Nothing I do will work.” I said.
“I read about memory loss spells and one of the books said there are three ways to get your memories back. One is to wait for a few years for the spell to wear off, two get the witch/warlock who cast the spell to take it off, or… kiss someone who you relate to most.” Dylan said.
“Who do you think I relate to most?” I asked.
“I don’t know. Ask your old friends.” he said pointing into the hall.
I got up and looked into the hall. All my mortal friends were there. “Who do you think I relate to most?” I asked them.
“Dylan.” they all said at once.
“How?” he asked.
“She only uses magic to speed read.” Julia said.
“She loves to help people.” Taylor said.
“She is way too nice for her own good.” Trent said.
“She’s a witch.” Brooke said.
“She is the middle sibling in her family.” Meghan said.
“People used to be really mean to her.” Brooke said.
“Don’t forget that she is the smartest person we know, besides you.” Trent said.
“I guess I do relate to you the most.” I said.
“Are you sure?” Dylan asked.
“Of course.” I said.
He got an odd twinkle in his eyes. Suddenly I looked around for the others and realized that they had left. Neither of us had noticed my mortal friends make an exit down the hall and around the corner.
I looked into his eyes and put my hand on his elbow. My hand slowly ran down his arm to his hand. When my hand made it to his, he closed his fingers around mine. I slide my other arm around his neck and said, “You don’t have to, Dylan.”
“I want to help you get your memories back, so yes I do.” he whispered.
The next thing I know was his lips were against mine. He was kissing me and I was kissing him. Suddenly memories slammed into my skull. I let go of Dylan’s hand and stepped back. “I remember everything!” I exclaimed. “Where is Ethan?”
“In his dorm room.” he said.
I hugged Dylan and sprinted all the way to B1017. As I slammed my fist against the door for the umpteenth time someone said, “Ethan is in the grounds.”
“Thanks.” I said and ran.
After looking around the grounds for three hours I walked back to Ethan’s dorm room and leaned against the wall opposite.
About Time!
March 4th
Around three this morning Ethan carried me into his room. He laid me down on his bed and sat down at his desk. When I finally woke up around six he was still studying. He stood up and then saw me open my eyes.
“You’re awake.” he said.
“You’re here.” I said.
“So what did you…” he began.
Before he finished I had my arms around his neck. I pulled him into a hug. “I’m so sorry, Ethan. Sorry I didn’t believe you.” I said.
“You got your memories back?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I sighed, “about time, right?”
“About time doesn’t even cut it. Will you go get some ice cream with me later?”
“Of course.”
“So are we back together?”
“Yeah, I suppose we are.”
“So, mortal world or here?”
“Defiantly here.” we said together.
“So how did you get your memories back?”
“Dylan figured it out, but that is all I really remember. I remember everything from before that moment but not when I got them back.” I said.
“Then that is all that matters.” he said putting a rose behind my left ear.
“Even a mortal can do that.” I repeated what Natalie had said.
“The day we met. I’ll never forget.”
“I wish I could have said the same thing.” I laughed.
Ethan laughed too. We walked out of his room into the grounds. “Kelsey Alyssa!” a witch named Amanda said.
“Hey, Amanda. Hey, Kaitlin.” I said.
“So… who is this?” Kaitlin asked.
“This is my boyfriend, Ethan. Ethan this is Amanda and Kaitlin. They are both witches.” I said pointing to each of them in turn.
They shook hands. “So what is his blood status?” Amanda asked.
“He renounced his powers, so he is mortal now.” I said.
“You’re dating a mortal?” someone behind me asked.
“Yes, Sage, I am.” I said to the one part of my memories I wish I could have never remembered.
“And to think we are related!” Scarlet said.
“I rather say we aren’t.” I said.
“Whatever!” Sapphire said.
“Oh, and it’s such a pity that you don’t have your powers anymore… mortals!” I teased.
“Oh, shut your yap, hag.” Scarlet said.
“I may not be a warlock but that doesn’t mean I’m above hitting a girl.” Ethan said.
“Ethan, it’s fine. Don’t hit her, when I could just magic her away.” I said. “Or hex her like she did your broomstick.”
“If Daddy knew what you…” Sage began.
“Go ahead, tell Daddy. He can’t do anything about it.” I said.
Ethan eyes me like I was a whole different person. “So you never told… that you are a Sinister? Big mistake.” Scarlet said.
“I couldn’t care less who her father is. She never turned my friend into a dog.” Ethan said.
My sisters turned their backs on us and left. “I’m sorry I never told you, Ethan.” I said.
“Kels, it doesn’t matter who you father is. There was a reason that they let you keep your magic. You have always lain low and used your magic for good.” he said.
“I still should have told you.” I said.
“I’ll always love you, no matter who you’re related to.”
“Take my magic.”
“What?”
“Not all of it. I learned that when you truly love somebody who is a mortal you can give them half your powers to them.” I said.
“No, you don’t get it, love. I gave up my powers, I want to be mortal. There are things they do that we don’t. Like football, drama, and track and field.” he said.
“Okay.”
We walked to an ice cream shop. “Split.” Ethan said.
“Double scope.” I said.
Seconds later a waiter brought us our ice cream. I picked up a spoon and scooped up some of each scoops of the ice cream. “Appetite. I like that in a girl.” Ethan said.
“It feels like I haven’t eaten in ages.” I said.
“Maybe we should get pizza in the mortal world.” he said.
I nodded and then we finished our ice cream. We got up and left the shop and just outside the shop I opened the door between the worlds. “Ready?” I asked.
“As I’ll ever be.” Ethan said.
I took his hand and we stepped through the door. “Kelsey Alyssa’s finely back!” Taylor screamed.
“Tay!” I yelled running to hug her.
“Kelsey, how… how are you?” Trent asked.
“I got my memory back, but I don’t remember how.” I said, winking.
“Yeah, Dylan said he had figured it out and then left.” Brooke said.
“How can you not remember how you got your memories back?” Meghan asked.
“Well I was kind of focused on the hundreds of thousands of memories being shoved back into my skull.” I said.
“I can’t believe it. You’re back with Ethan?” Julia said.
“Yeah, it was a misunderstanding two years ago.” Ethan said.
“I realized that day before I lost my memories.” I said. “There are a few people I want you to meet.”
The portal between worlds opened and Amanda and Kaitlin stepped through it. “Everyone this is Amanda and Kaitlin. Amanda and Kaitlin this is Trent, Taylor, Julia, Meghan, and Brooke.” Ethan said pointing to each of them in turn.
“Nice to meet yawl.” Kaitlin said.
“Who is the tall, brown haired boy in the back?” Amanda asked.
I looked around and saw who she meant. “Excuse us.” I said.
He took the hint and started to walk over to my left. I followed him and asked, “What are you doing here?”
“I heard you got hurt and you had just been released to the hospital. Someone said you were here and I wanted to make sure you were alright.” he said.
“You don’t know do you?”
“What do you mean?”
“I wasn’t injured physically or emotionally. Well, the short story is I lost my memory for two years. I just got it back it back yesterday.”
“Then what is the long story?”
“That isn’t any of your business. Now leave.” I said.
He turned and left, simple as that. “Kelsey, what was that about?” Ethan asked.
“He is kind of creepy.” Kaitlin said.
“Someone told him I got hurt. He wanted to make sure I was okay.” I said. “That was my foster brother.”
“Tyler? I thought he was your biological brother.” Taylor said.
“My last name isn’t really Schott. It’s Sinister and I have three sister, Scarlet, Sage, and Sapphire.” I told them.
Everyone looked around. “Why don’t you look surprised, Trent?” Julia asked.
“I already told him eight years ago.” I said.
He nodded. “Really? Why didn’t you tell us?” Julia asked.
“I saw her do magic and I asked her about it the next day.” Trent said.
Ethan and I explained the old laws of Halloweentown. When everyone understood why I hadn’t told anyone else Amanda, Kaitlin, Ethan, and I went back to Halloweentown. “That blonde boy was cute.” Amanda said.
"He is also single.” I muttered.
Ethan started to laugh but then I gave him a side glance. He stopped and said, “We should, love. Looks like our plans for pizza just got cancelled.”
We walked back to our dorm rooms and I called him on the personal witch’s glass he had given me. “I never said goodnight.” I said.
“Goodnight.” he said.
“Goodnight.” I said.
I closed the locket and tucked it into my shirt. Slowly I opened my suit case and cast a spell. A secret compartment on it opened and I pulled out the pictures of me and Ethan. They were all old pictures and I had hidden them there so no one else would find them while snooping through my room back in the mortal world.
I reached into the bag down to my arm and pulled out a portfolio. It was also filled with pictures but this one was of my mortal friends and Ethan. As I turned the pages I smiled and decided to hand them on my wall, so I conjured up some picture frames.
I put each picture in a frame and hung it on the wall somewhere. After I finished I laid down and fell into a peaceful sleep.
I Love You
August 24th
When I woke up this morning my locket rang. I opened it and saw Ethan’s smiling face. “Hey, babe.” I said.
“Hey, love.” he said.
“Any plans tonight?” I asked.
“Where ever you are I’m there.” he said.
“You’re not right here, right now.” I smiled.
The door opened and Ethan was there. “Yeah, I am.” he said.
I took a few steps forward and wrapped my arms around his waist. He put his arms around me and pulled me close. “There is no keeping us apart is there?” I said.
“Not anymore and never again.”
“I love you.” I said.
“I love you, too.” he said.
The Future
Ethan and I date for three years after that and then we split on good terms. I later fell in love with Dylan and we married. We had four children. Ethan is the oldest, Marnie is the first twin, Taylor is the second twin, and Trent is the youngest.
Dylan and I are happy together and Ethan and Marnie are always around since they got married and became the aunt and uncle of our children. Trent and Tiffany made up and got married and Julia married a guy named Branden.
Ethan, Marine, Dylan, and I all live at my house with our kids. We are the best of friends, but we are also family. We celebrate mortal holidays and go to the mortal world every now and then just for the experience… or the pizza I’m still not sure. We also visit Trent and my other mortal friends.
Marine and Ethan had three kids. The oldest is Alyssa Marie, the middle is Sonya, and the youngest is named after my newest best friend, Brooke.
Kaitlin and Amanda haven’t contacted us in the resent years so I don’t know about how they are doing.
